Intentions Brief - Drawing Workshop

For part of my Intentions brief I took part in a drawing workshop. I've begun to feel a bit like i'm producing the same drawings so I thought this workshop might help. I really enjoyed the workshop all in all, it taught me that your drawings don't have to be perfectly detailed and represent what you are trying to draw, its all about the information you get into the drawing.

 For my object, we had to pick something that represented our brief. I decided to choose a shoe and a toy model of big ben, I think this related well to my travelling/journey idea. 

   

This image was one of my favourite exercises in the workshop. We set up our objects, paper and drawing equipment, then moved to another desk and drew another object. We then moved back, drew our own, then swapped over and someone drew on top of our drawing. 
  I really enjoyed this part of the workshop as it made me feel a little bit less precious about my work. I felt less scared to start my drawings as someone had already worked onto the page first. 
The layers I made from this is something I really liked and i'd like to try it in my own drawings.

This is someone else's drawing that I drew on top of. I really like the style of this drawing, especially the bright red chilli against the pale background and then the really detailed black drawing on top, again this is another layers. It was really hard to draw on top of this drawing as I didn't want to hide someone elses drawing, but it was a good experience.

 This image is of my drawings of big ben. I really liked the layering idea, so I decided to draw onto acetatee. I really found it hard drawing on this different material as it was difficult to try and not to smudge it. I think it has come out really well. 
I think i'll use this image again and again, layering it on top of different materials and papers. I also like the idea of adding stitch over the top, adding another layer.

These are some images that I created and then swapped with Amy, who then added her own drawing on top. I really like these drawings as our drawing style is very similar so it was quite unusual to see what we did to each others work. What I like most about these drawings is the different styles that have been mixed together. On the right hand image, I would have never thought about using oil pastels added to this drawing.

These are some embroidery samples I created from my drawing. I decided to play on the idea of a journey, so I decided to create a storyboard of images I had drawn and photographed over the summer. I really like the rough, messy drawings and boxes that I have created. I feel like the images should have some colour but i'm not sure what to use.

Whilst drawing and collecting visual research, I decided to move my drawings into a new medium and try something different, rather than just doing research using a pen and paper. I created these embroidery samples from my drawings I'd collected whilst in London.

I really like the continual line you get from using a sewing machine, it's something that I tried to translate from my drawings into these samples and I think it has worked well. The mis-shapen and wonky lines that you get from machine stitch is something I really like, it makes my drawings seem less precious as once you make a mistake there is no going back. 

I added a wash of colour over the top using a pro-marker. I really like the happy mistake that happened as all the ink bled into each other, mixing the colours and joining the lines to the colour.

 Over the summer, I spent a lot of time in London, looking at all the exhibitions and drawing. The brief was to create a visual diary, which I decided to mainly focus on the outside world and all the architecture available. I used my visual diary to create a journey of all the places I had travelled in London. 

With my drawings I tried to experiment as much as possible. For example, (I love drawing with pens) I used as many different types of pens in order to create texture. I really enjoyed using pro-markers as well and adding colour to my drawings, it's something i'd never really done before and it brought me right out of my comfort zone. I also really enjoyed drawing outside, something i've always been paranoid about before.

During my first year of university, studying Textiles in Practice, I have learnt a lot of things and made a lot of new friends. 
For my first workshop choice, I knew from the start that I wanted to take part in embroidery. I found this workshop very good, as the work load was differed (three weeks with work how much you feel necessarily and then three weeks of being told what work needed to be done) I believe that this eased me into the workload and explained in a good way, what work needed to be done. Whilst learning how to use a sewing machine, I felt I knew quite a lot about it and was very well experienced from my foundations, however I was surprised how much I did not know and it was great how the tutors took us through each section of it and explained in fully. 

For my second workshop, I chose Knit and Weave. This is something I have always wanted to take part in as it is something I have never done before. The first workshop was weave, which included a lot of slow learning, for example, doing one thing at a time and being in the same place. This is something i’ve never liked doing before, but in this case, it worked very well. I also liked learning about all the different threads available in weave and experimenting with all the different textures. Weave is something I really enjoyed, the lengthy process made me feel more proud of my work, and it is something I would definitely like to re-visit later on. During my time in knit, I found that I could create more and more samples in a short space of time, rather than with weave, which was a lengthy process, giving me more freedom. 

When I first started university, I thought that I had made the wrong choice and that I would not be able to cope with such a different change. I spent the first couple of weeks debating whether it was the right place for me to be. This is something which how now changed and I am really looking forward to hopefully return to start my second year.

Overall, I think I made the best choice by sticking to my gut feeling and staying at university. I have learnt so much in such a short period of time and I cannot believe how fast my time has gone. After noticing how fast the first years has gone, I have realised how little time I have and I wish to learn as much as possible in such a short time and take part in a much as I can.

This is the final film that we decided to show. I think this film shows all the different skills and the processes that each individual person explored. I think it joins us together in a group and showcases all our different talents.

Final Exhibition 

For our final exhibition, we decided to show our work in Hilton House. Jenny arranged all of the space and I think we got a really good space. The room was perfect of exhibiting the film as it wasn't took large that the film got lost in the room. 

 After having to leave early the day before we put our work up (due to the Manchester United Parade) I came in the next day ready to put work up, however having had to leave early, I did not know where my work was to go. The curators Hilton House told me where to put my work so I went along with it. When other members of the group turned up, they had already decided the day before where work was going to go. This turned into a little argument, which was all apologised for afterwards. I think that that helped clear the air a little bit as we were all stressed our with the exhibition. I decided to wait until Nichola turned up and asked her where she thought the best place was. 

Nichola decided that the best place would be to line my photographs up along the bottom of the wall, in order to tie in with the idea of the shoes. This is something I really liked and thought it was a very different way of showing my work. Another good thing was when people were leaving the room after watching the film, they would see the shoes on the floor, another thing I really liked. 

 Overall, I think the exhibition was a great experience and working with people on it was something I would try again. It was nice at the end seeing everyone work together and all the different skills showcased in one final show.
